Overlooked/Underrated Wii Game 5 out of 5
Let me start off by first saying, this is the kind of game that people will probably love or hate. This is a fairly original, unorthodox game that can be extremely addictive if you have the right mind set. Bear in mind, this game falls somewhat outside the traditional genres for console games, and can be best compared to the Katamari series. It is in many respects a sandbox game with puzzle elements requiring a certain amount of precision and good hand-eye coordination to be mastered. However, although it does take some skill to finish the game with close to 100% completion, it is simple and easy enough to pick up and play.
The basic idea is that you are a "blob" who has the ability to absord and disperse color to your surroundings by rolling over or brushing against terrain and objects. You've been tasked with bringing color to what are initially "colorless" levels, while also completing various challenges and tasks along the way. Many of the challenges are optional, but are usually fun and quick (a minute or less typically) and will help you greatly in completing each level. The control scheme consists of using the analog stick to control the blob, and shaking the wii remote to jump. That's about it, so it's pretty easy to pick up and play.
What makes this game enjoyable is the satisfaction you get from literally "painting" your environment and seeing it continuously change in response to your actions. The game offers plenty of diversity aside from simply rolling over everything in sight as well. Various challenges will have you gathering large quantities of color to transform major buildings and landmarks, taking out enemies, running through obstacle courses and exploring new areas, among other things. As you complete challenges and bring back color to the levels, new areas will unlock allowing you to explore further. After completing each level (you don't have to do everything, just do enough to unlock the final gate leading to the exit) a new level will unlock for you to play. Each level can take anywhere from 15 to over an hour to complete.
I've read some reviews where people complained about the length of the levels and they are correct in saying that it can take over an hour to complete a level with 100% completion, without being given an opportunity to save along the way (the game only saves after you finish a level). Nevertheless, I've found that most levels can be finished in under 20 minutes if you simply are trying to get through it. As such, the time commitment is relative to how thorough you want to be, and the game can easily be completed by casual players while at the same time offering good replay value and greater challenge for more advanced players that are looking to do everything the game has to offer.
The graphics are bright and colorful, and as good as anything I've seen on the Wii. The sound effects are appropriate if not particularly noteworthy. The music consists primarily of various jazz soundtracks that to some degree correspond to your actions on the screen. In other words, when you are actively coloring areas the music will include additional notes or instruments which add to the sensation of accomplishment. It is a unique technique, and one that I admire, although I do wish that the soundtracks could be randomized for more variety (especially when doing a long level). Overall though, I like what they've done here, although if you aren't a fan of jazz you may not care for it.
Personally, I loved this game. I had bought it awhile ago based on a review and recommendation from IGN, but hadn't bothered to play it for months until I finally gave it a go. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and that it exceeded my expectations. I'm 32 years old and if I can enjoy it as much as I did, I think anyone can. I would recommend this game to players of all ages and skill levels. A word to parents -- I didn't find anything particularly objectionable about this game, so it's safe for younger kids. A word to experienced gamers -- give this game a try, although the box cover and graphics might seem childish, there is a pretty challenging and satisfying game here if you give it chance. I hope this review helps, and good luck!
No save feature! 2 out of 5
I'm not sure why this game is getting such good reviews. The one major downfall, and it's a big one, is that there is NO save feature. This means you have to complete an entire level before you quit. These aren't short 15 minute levels either. It can take anywhere from 1-2 hours to complete one and if you want to quit beforehand, forget it. You'll have to start ALL over. Sorry, but this completely ruins the game for me. If you are not someone who wants to sit around and play this game for hours on end, do not buy it.
Awesome! 5 out of 5
You should really give this game a shot. I'm not into hardcore action games like Halo - Mario is my type of action game, and this hits the spot. I highly recommend it if you're looking for something light and fun. It's not terribly difficult though it definitely escalates in difficulty as you progress through the game. It was definitely challenging enough to keep my interest - but not too challenging for me to give up.
Plus, the scenes you watch between levels are HILARIOUS. Love, love them! Wish there were more!
I really hope they make a sequel. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Great deal on a great game!
not what i was looking for 2 out of 5
i had bought this game for my son i had read that it was an easy game for children to play and that they could learn colors while they were playing. That is completely bogus. you need to use both the wii-mote and the nunchuck and you have to be able to have enough control of your motor skills in order to play the game.
Creative, but difficult for youngsters 3 out of 5
This game is very creative and different. I found it to be fun (mom) but it was very difficult for my 4 (almost 5) year old to comprehend. Some of the challenges involve too complicated of moves for younger children. I think it would be a lot fun for children ages 8 and over.
The other downfall was it takes a VERY long time to get to a save checkpoint. There were times I had to play 30 min longer to get a checkpoint or all work would be gone.
I would rent this game before you buy it. It is fun if it's the right game for you.
